HISTORICAL NOTE ABOUT LOVETTSVILLE
The Lovettsville Clerk Saved the Loudoun County Public Records in the Civil War Days.
Loudoun County has public records going back to 1757. These records provide vital statistics for births, deaths, land records and other matters deemed important to the early settlers of Loudoun County.
During the Civil War, when the Union was progressing towards Lovettsville, the town Clerk Mr. George K. Fox, collected the records, transported them to a safe place and stored them.
All of the records were returned intact in July/August 1865. It was reported
that "Not a single piece of paper was lost". We all owe a debt of gratitude
to this conscientious American who realized the importance of public
records to the historical memory of a community.
